Web 2.0 Thought Summary

Great program! I actually enjoyed doing this. Final thoughts: Many fun and interesting sites out there in the ether. Twittering is for twits. Can see using more of YouTube in programming. Would be great if CPSD or MMSCL had computers available for basic computer classes, Computer Club, etc. for kids like Middle Country has a room w/ available computers for programs. PALS Wiki very helpful in library system basics. Will continue to use GoogleReader and Delicious.

Craigslist

I found ThreeVillagePeople, a site for artisans in the Three Village School District at http://longisland.craigslist.org/grp/1098328838.html. No direct link to site.
Site interesting, a mix of local businesses and artists.

GoogleDocs

GoogleDocs has many applications, especially for collobrative writing.

I hadn't seen any wikis besides Wikipedia and thought the town wikis (Ann Arbor, Rochester) would be great to look for on the web before traveling to a place you're unfamiliar with. I took a good look at the at Catalog Info in the PALS wiki, picking up new info. The idea of a community wiki on a library website is very interesting.

Finding new feeds

Found manuevering around all three frustrating. I tried various search terms in Google Reader, Blogline, and Technorati. Then tried search terms for children's lit blogs I view. Results not great. Probably fine if you're searching for something many others are searching for, like NY Yankees, Newsday.

Discovering Feeds

I really enjoyed looking at the Staff Feeds/SCLS Feeds (could be more interesting)/ Public Feeds, etc. On the MMSCL website the RSS feeds were a little disappointing because they were only listings of new materials. Is there a way for patrons using our website and catalog to view the Public Feeds I saw in the Staff Catalog?
I added the NYT Book Review to my Google Reader account. I think I'll use Google Reader from now on.

RSS and Newsreaders

I assumed that RSS feed readers were a useful tool for heavy users of the internet to quickly access updated information on sites they have a keen interest in. But it's also a useful tool to find blogs on a topic ( i.e., Yankees) that may be hard to find using a browser.

SuffolkWave

I found SuffolkWave a little tough to navigate, though I'm sure the computer savvy would have no trouble with it. Quickly glancing at the SW homepage, I was looking for underlined words to click on, so got into NetLibrary, then tried to find downloadable audio books but couldn't find them. It wasn't until I meandered back to the homepage that I realized I should have clicked on the big Suffolk Wave banner ( I always forget that you can click on them) that I found the audio books. I had no trouble downloading Overdrive Media, but tried twice to download books and couldn't. (Error:Ox80070057: the parameter is incorrect). It could be my home computer. ???
I think I'll move on to the next segment. One thing that I disliked about SuffolkWave was that many of the audiobooks didn't have copies available to download. Why is this and how can it be remedied? What's the point of having a catalog if very few are available? I'll stick to Books on CD and hard copies, thank you very much :-)

I use LibraryThing to record children's books. Does anyone know how to make separate book lists or folders on LibraryThing? Is there a way to list books in the order you've posted them, instead of alphabetically?

Delicious + tag clouds

I may use Delicious for my bookmarking and I have actually used our OPAC's tag cloud when helping a patron.

My Space and Facebook

Both were interesting. I particularly liked the My Space graphics and thought, what a good idea to be able to look at what's happening currently, and what the library has been up to in the recent past. Anything that helps with the library's visibility is a good thing!
